Sunset is one of the most anticipated moments of the day in Urla. Corners that face the sea, the sun going down behind the olive groves and the coolness of the evening make a lovely combination. But a good sunset takes more than going to the right place; arriving on time and getting back comfortably afterwards are part of the plan too. This guide is for those who want to build a sunset route with a chauffeur.
How do you plan for sunset time?
The time the sun sets changes markedly with the season. It sets late in the evening in summer and early in the afternoon in winter. So rather than giving a fixed time, we recommend checking that day’s sunset time in a weather app.
A general rule: be at your destination at least 30–40 minutes before sunset. The light is already beautiful in that window; if you arrive at the last minute, the rush of parking, walking and finding a spot may make you miss the view. Journey length varies with traffic; allow for the fact that coastal roads can be busy on summer weekends.
Coast-focused sunset routes
Urla’s coastline stretches around Çeşmealtı, Özbek, Demircili and Altınköy. Each has a different seaside mood. For details of the coastal routes, see our Urla coastal routes article.
- Around the pier: Close to central Urla, reached on a short walk, and lively in the late afternoon. Handy for a short sunset break.
- Towards Çeşmealtı: The road follows the coast with sea views, and there are open spots where you can stop and look.
- Quarantine Island (Karantina Adası) view: Seeing the island from the shore is a much-loved frame for photographs in evening light.
For general information on the beaches, you can also look at the Urla beaches guide in the sources section.
Wine route and hilltop views
Sunset is beautiful not only by the sea but among the vineyards too. From points rising among olive groves and vines the horizon looks wide. This option is a good alternative for those who want to get away from the crowds on the coast. The area around Kuşçular and Zeytineli may suit those looking for this kind of quiet view. You can read the route guide for stops along the wine route here.
Sample evening plans
Times are approximate and vary with traffic.
| Plan | Flow | Suited to |
|---|---|---|
| Short evening | Walk along the pier, sunset, dinner | Couples, short stays |
| Coastal tour | Two or three stops on the coast road, sunset at the last stop | Groups of friends |
| Vineyards and sunset | Wine route in the afternoon, sunset on a hilltop | Those seeking quiet views |
| Towards Çeşme | Set off from Urla and spend the evening in Alaçatı | Those planning a long day |
Urla to Alaçatı takes approximately 30–40 minutes, though it can be longer in summer traffic. For long evening plans like these, discuss the return time at the start.
The return transfer after sunset
The return after sunset is often the part of the plan that gets the least thought. When the sun goes down the air cools, roads darken and tiredness builds. This is where the advantage of travelling with a chauffeur shows: you spend dinner as you please, then go straight back to your accommodation.
Settle the following in advance for the return:
- All stops, such as the sunset spot and the restaurant
- Estimated finish time and waiting time in the car
- The accommodation address or final drop-off point
- Number of passengers and any luggage or shopping bags
Waiting terms are set out in the quote; the price is sent in writing via WhatsApp before the journey, and the booking is confirmed once the quote is approved. If your evening will run long with a meal break, writing that at the quote stage spares you any surprises.
Practical reminders
- Take a light jacket for windy evenings; the air on the coast can cool quickly.
- Charge your phone; you will need it for photographs and maps.
- Depending on parking and crowds, avoid arriving right at the moment of sunset.
- Some passengers may fall asleep on the way back; if you say so beforehand, the driving will be adjusted.
Small details for photographs and comfort
If you plan to take sunset photographs, arrive early so as not to miss the half hour before sunset when the light is softest. If you are shooting on a phone, watch the horizon line and the reflection on the sea; angles that show the silhouette of Quarantine Island (Karantina Adası) are appealing in this respect. Remember that at crowded points everyone heads for the same corner at once; a few steps further often offers a quieter frame.
Because the wind on the coast can change quickly, it is sensible to bring something warm for the evening. If you are thinking of a small picnic or a flask, do not forget to take your rubbish back with you.
Rainy or cloudy evenings
Not every evening has a clear sunset. On a cloudy day, rather than heading to the coast, build a flexible plan with a short stop if the weather clears: first dinner indoors, then a short seaside break depending on the weather. With a chauffeur this flexibility is easy to manage, because you only need to tell the driver about the change of route.
